When it comes to the best JRPGs that you can play right now, you are really spoiled for choice. There is certainly no shortage of excellent, memorable experiences on offer.
With characters falling in love over vast quests, and stories and world settings that will capture your imagination, JRPGs offer some of the richest and most enjoyable adventures.
Over the years, some incredibly influential titles have fallen under this umbrella, from early JRPGs like Chrono Trigger to more recent games that comfortably steal hours of our attention.
In fact, our own Austin Woods figured out why 2021 was an incredible year for JRPGs. Although this is just a small selection, we have selected some of the best JRPGs that you can play right now.
1. Final Fantasy 8 Remastered
As a remaster, Final Fantasy 8 doesn’t really accomplish all that much when it comes to improving the game’s visuals aside from a few updated character models.

In fact, the game’s background looks even blurred compared to the original version, which is downright embarrassing. However, it’s a good thing that the game’s combat system has been left almost untouched.
While it may seem like a drag to haul 100 shares of each element to maximize everyone’s stats, the introduction of speedups and workarounds has made the task infinitely easier. This ultimately allows players to get the most out of Final Fantasy 8’s combat and junction system without doing too much of the grind.
2. Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered
A smash hit on PS3, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch received the remaster treatment and launched on PC in 2019.

Telling the story of Oliver, a young boy who finds himself drawn into a mystical world, you will embark on an adventure filled with drama and intrigue in the hopes of bringing his mother back. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch has charm in abundance.
You’ll fall in love with its epic story, complemented by animated visuals created by Studio Ghibli. You’ll also be very attached to Drippy, a strange creature with a Welsh accent and a lantern attached to its nose. So, if you are after the best JRPGs on PC, this should really be added to your library.
3. Persona 5
That is, it’s as good as it gets from JRPGs. Persona 5 is much more than a sequel or “latest installment”.

The game instead stands as one of the best turn-based, story-driven games of all time, let alone recent history. Play as the Joker as you delve into the metaverse as you battle against the manifestations of human subconscious desires.
However, that’s only half of the game, as you’re tasked with maintaining relationships, uncovering the secrets of twisted people in town, and most dangerously… surviving through high school.
4. Babylon’s Fall
Fall of Babylon is a new IP coming out from the developers at PlatinumGames. This studio is known for delivering some fluid and incredibly fast-paced action gameplay.
With the fall of Babylon, players take on the role of a special warrior called a sentinel. You are assigned the task of climbing a huge tower to reach the summit. However, every floor is filled with enemies to defeat.
Players will start at the base of the tower by going through various shops and making sure they are satisfied with their gear before starting their run. There is also the ability to move through the game with cooperative multiplayer support.
5. FF Type-0
FF Type-0 is another title in the list developed by Square Enix and that is because it is a spin-off of the main Final Fantasy series.

You focus on a class of students from an elite military academy who come under attack from a nearby invading empire and must uncover the secrets of this ensuing war to ensure they survive the coming conflict.
Combat and gameplay is similar to the Crysis core game on the PSP and uses a real-time, action-based combat system that makes the game a great addition for any JRPG fan.
