1. Days Gone
Perhaps the most underrated title on this list, the story of Days Gone is unlike anything seen in a video game, with Deacon St. John serving as one of the most unique and interesting protagonists in a video game.
It’s a shame that Days Gone’s gameplay is ridiculously generic and doesn’t offer anything new to the player. The only unique part of the game is the crowd, and even their appearance loses its novelty over time.
2. Just Cause 2
Not one of the darkest games on this list, but one of the most powerful, exciting, and silly games out there. Rarely has an open world so vast and beautiful felt like a true playground, and with a hook and infinite parachute to rapidly navigate the lush and tropical island.
it was always time to play Is. Your shoes will barely touch the ground before you’re careening through the air again, swinging from place to place amid chaos and destruction. The world of Just Cause 3 may have been bigger, but it’s definitely better.
3. Far Cry 6
Far Cry 6 takes us to the fictional location of Yara, someone from South America, where you are charged with becoming a guerrilla fighter named Dani and toppling a dictatorship led by the Castillo family – namely a chap named Anton.

4. Death Stranding
Released in 2019, Death Stranding is undoubtedly a beautiful game with some of the most incredible motion capture work ever seen. The sense of scale and scope is immense and the terrain astonishing and treacherous.
However, what keeps the game from ranking high on this list is that, despite its beautiful visuals, the world itself feels pretty empty. Still, Death Stranding is a surprising yet divisive experience with some of the most realistic looking scenarios of this generation.
5. Saint’s Row
Compared to the rest of the games in the series, Saints Row is more serious in tone and attempts to tell a grim story about betrayal, blood, and mass violence. Although its humor is a bit more juvenile, the game was solid and offered players an alternative to Grand Theft Auto’s monopoly on the open world market.
At this point, I respect what Saints Row did in terms of transforming myself from my first game into what I am now. If they keep this style and tone, I’m not sure they’ll be able to make it to the mid-2000s. It was released exclusively for the Xbox 360 in 2006.
