10 of the best movies on Netflix right now

One could argue that the way we consume our content has changed drastically in recent years. Ever since the rise of over the top (OTT) streaming sites, waiting for movie releases every other week has become redundant as we start consuming more and more content within the comfort of our homes. While there will always be arguments about which is better, we are still living in a world where OTT platforms and movie theaters coexist.

This list includes Netflix Originals, movies that went unnoticed upon release and some movies that were not available to you at the time. So let’s take a look at — in no particular order — 10 gems on Netflix that you won’t see anywhere else:

1. SNOWPIERCER

Before the world recognized Bong Joon-ho’s genius with Parasite and Okja, there was Snowpiercer. A post-apocalyptic tale about a ‘life train’ who is divided by class, this modern masterpiece is an edgy, belly-filling tale about survival and equality.

Snowpiercer will rock you and this is a film that is a symbol of how Netflix has made global cinema accessible to all of us. It also stars Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton and Jamie Bell in pivotal roles.

2. ICARUS

Icarus is a documentary about one of the biggest sports scandals in history. Doping has always been synonymous with sport and Ikarus is a brilliant retelling of the scandal that gripped Russia a few years back.

Icarus is thrilling where you are simply blown away by the sheer value of exploring scene after scene. Brian Fogel, the director, does a great job sorting it all out, and even though it might make some places look like you’re watching a fictional movie, it’s hard to believe it isn’t.

3. Hunt for the Wilderpeople

Perhaps writer-director Taika Waititi’s best-realized film, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Rambo, has been re-imagined as a sweet-tempered adventure comedy. Following the sudden passing of her foster mother, Bella, delinquent teen Ricky (Julian Dennison) and Bella’s distant husband, Hector (Sam Neill), run into the bush before Ricky is taken away by child welfare services.

However, soon, the pair becomes the target of a nationwide search. Thanks to its remarkable craft and Denison and Neal’s solid chemistry, Wilderpeople packs an undeniable punch.

4. The Hitman’s Bodyguard

Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson make a formidable pair in this sweet action-comedy. When a sought-after mercenary (Reynolds) is hired for a security detail job, he is shocked to learn that his newest client is Darius Kincaid (Jackson), a world-renowned assassin who is a Vicious is ready to testify against the Belarusian dictator (Oldman). Hitman’s bodyguard overcomes his cliché by leaning into the screwball field—and letting its two superstar leads control the proceedings.

5. Stan & Ollie

Between 1926 and 1950, Englishman Stan Laurel and American Oliver Hardy made 107 comedy films together. By 1953, however, the famed Funnies were on their last legs and, desperate to be reunited with their fans, embarked on an in-demand music hall tour of the United Kingdom.

Stan and Ollie pretend the above tour… and then some: Laurel (Steve Coogan), it turns out, secretly blames Hardy (John C. Reilly) for advancing her career.

6. Dolemite Is My Name

Dolemite Is My Name is one of the funniest movies on Netflix based on Rudy Ray Moore, a real-life great comedian, singer, actor, and filmmaker.

The film is about Eddie Murphy who plays Rudy Ray Moore and develops a character named Dolemite who becomes the star of a kung-fu movie that can make or break Moore.

Dolemite Is My Name received a positive reception from the public and film critics. It was selected as one of the top ten films of the year by Time magazine and the National Board of Review.

7. Her

If you love science-fiction movies, but with the fun associated with them, then you must watch the movie ‘Har’.

The film follows the story of Theodore Twombly who develops an unlikely relationship with Samantha, an AI virtual assistant.

“Har” is one of the top comedies on Netflix and has won several prestigious awards including Best Original Screenplay. ‘Har’ was also voted the 84th biggest film since 2000.

The film was dedicated to Harris Sevides, Adam Yauch, James Gandolfini and Maurice Sendak, who died before the film was released.

8. Along For The Ride

Based on the novel by Sarah Desson, Along for the Ride is directed and written by Sofia Alvarez and stars Emma Passaro and Belmont Camelli as Auden and Allie. The film also stars Kate Bosworth, Dermot Mulroney, and fresh off-the-back renditions of her epic mother role in Made, Andie McDowell.

Now for the plot—it’s Auden’s last summer before college and she’s spending it in picturesque Colby Beach. While the other teens party in the sun, Auden spends her time walking the streets while everyone else is asleep. Everything changes when she meets Eli, a charming and mysterious fellow insomniac.

9. The In Between

In the mood for a supernatural love story? You have good luck. In the middle is your next ‘Cruise Control’ which centers on a teenage girl, Tessa (Joey King), who, after spending most of her childhood in foster homes, doesn’t believe she deserves her own love story. Everything changes after a chance encounter with Skylar (Kyle Allen), a senior from a neighboring town, is a true romantic.

However, tragedy strikes when Skylar is killed in a car accident, while Tessa survives. Tessa soon becomes convinced that Skylar is attempting to reconnect with her from the afterworld. With the help of her best friend, Tessa tries to contact Skylar one last time and we’re not crying, you are.

10. The Weekend Away

Grab popcorn, a warm blanket and get ready for this Netflix crime thriller. The Weeknd Away, starring Leighton Meester, is based on Sarah Alderson’s 2020 bestselling novel of the same name, and let’s say the book has a very busy twist at the end.

A weekend getaway for Croatia turns bad when Beth (Leighton Meester) is accused of murdering her best friend (Christina Wolff). Some people have compared this Netflix iteration to a female Bourne movie and we mean… there’s only one way to find out.
