The Nintendo Switch has an amazing library, but the hybrid console’s vast list of RPGs is truly staggering. There are JRPGs with loot-filled dungeon crawlers, turn-based battles, and epic stories, elaborate open-world games where you can create your own unique character, and everything in between.
So, to help you find your next RPG, we’ve put together this list of the 40 best Switch RPGs (in alphabetical order).
1. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is an HD remaster of the cult-classic PlayStation RPG and the follow-up to the beloved Chrono Trigger. While Chrono Cross continues some of the plot threads from Chrono Trigger, it’s a very different game with a unique story, an all-new combat system, and 45 playable characters to find and recruit.
The Radical Dreamers edition also includes the official-localized version of Radical Dreamers: a Satelliteview-exclusive visual novel based on Chrono Cross, and is now playable in English for the first time.
2. Dark Souls Remastered
There are many Souls-like RPGs available on the Nintendo Switch, but Dark Souls Remastered is (surprisingly) the best.
As the Chosen Undead you’ll explore the ruined kingdom of Lordran, fight fearsome creatures and massive bosses, and collect souls to be used to upgrade your character and craft new equipment.
You too will die. very. But don’t be discouraged; Dark Souls is challenging, but it’s one of the most rewarding RPGs you can play on Switch.
3. Disco Elysium – The Final Cut
Arguably the best and most ambitious RPG of modern times, Disco Elysium tells the story of a single crime that you, a drunken detective, must solve. Its script is quite simple on another level, and it gives you the freedom to approach matters in your own way that is unique.
It won’t be to everyone’s taste, as it is, but the Switch is the perfect place to play it, so you can drop in for quick sessions as you try to piece together what’s left of the decaying Revachols. Running in the dock.
4. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
The latest installment in the storied Fire Emblem franchise is an absolute doozy, with recitative ears. You play as a professor in an official academy, and quickly choose one of three houses to teach.
That option will see you chasing a very different story, but all varieties share its two gameplay pillars. They’re brutal strategic battles with turn-based combat, and free time that you can spend getting to know a huge cast of memorable characters. It is a falling game for hours at a time.
5. CrossCode
Crosscode is an Action RPG set in a fictional MMO called “Cross World”. Players control Lee, a silent cross world player with a mysterious past. While Crosscode includes MMO elements such as multiple side quests that run around the world, expansive skill trees, and even other “players”, it is also more popular in classic SNES RPGs and adventure games such as Secret of Mana, Ys or The The Legend of Zelda: Plays Like A. Link to the past.
6. Bravely Default II
It’s hard to find a turn-based game that does it better than Bravely Default II. With a variety of unique jobs, a memorable storyline filled with memorable cast, and stunning HD graphics, the sequel to the 2012 hit does not disappoint.
The game uses a unique combat system that revolves around brave and default commands – allowing for a large amount of freedom during combat. The best part is that you can find a free demo for the game on the eShop, giving you the chance to try out the action before making a purchase.
