Can be as provocative as the melodies of Michael Jackson or the Beatles in Mortal Kombat. Representing multiple generations of gamers, the GamingXnew tech team put more than 150 nominees through a multistage ranking process to compile a cross-section of gaming’s best ideas over nearly four decades.
Here are our picks for the 5 greatest video games of all time.
1. Gears of War 3
The first three “Gears of War” games are a great example of iteration done right. The first game was pretty bare-bones—a horror-inspired campaign of decent length that could be played by one or two people, and a five-on-five competitive multiplayer component with a handful of fast-action modes.
“Gears of War 2” added new types of weapons and equipment, greatly expanded the scope of the campaign, and added in Horde Mode, a cooperative wave-based survival arena that saw a resurgence and became a staple of many other games.
“Gears of War 3” took all that precedent and improved upon it in many ways. The epic campaign (no pun intended) allowed for four-player co-op and the competitive multiplayer added new modes and options to expand its appeal beyond hardcore gamers. A new faction of enemies that was created for “Halo” – a fighting puzzle far beyond the previous two games.
Horde Mode was introduced with a fun base-building component and a system of progressive unlocks. Also, Epic brought in Karen Travis, the author of the surprisingly great “Gears of War” novels, to work on the game’s story, resulting in a third act for the trilogy that is filled with emotion.
2. Super Mario Galaxy 2
And what was the sequel to Super Mario Galaxy 2! Any rough edges from the first game were polished off, the planet-hopping concept was more creative than ever, and the sheer variety on offer was nothing short of surprising.
It’s the level design department where Super Mario Galaxy 2 really shines, though each stage is a lively playground that you can watch all night long if you can.
Then there’s the Wii Hook, as the game found great new ways to use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to deliver exciting boss fights and spur-of-the-moment gameplay. True Mario sequels are rare, but this 2010 game proved just how cool they can be and helped increase the appeal of the Wii.
Although Super Mario Galaxy 2 has the same Metascore as its predecessor, we all know that the sequel is better. Correct? But seriously, the fact that both of these games sit at 97 is wildly impressive.
3. Titanfall 2
Titanfall 2 is one of the best FPS games that not many have played. In a sea of different shooters, Titanfall and its sequel dared to do something different.
Other shooters have incorporated mechs in the past, but Respawn Entertainment’s dedication to building a strong connection between the pilot and Titans stands out. T2’s level design sets it apart from others in the genre with its combination of pilot and titan gameplay.
Stand-out examples include the time-shifting fifth mission Effect and Cause, and The Gauntlet shows in its tutorial that the still-fast-moving community is setting new records today.
4. GRAND THEFT AUTO V
Another successful entry from Rockstar, Grand Theft Auto V follows three criminals who plan their survival by committing a robbery.
The story follows the trio as they complete missions using their eight skill sets. Characters can be played from a first or third person perspective as they strengthen their abilities with each completed mission.
The story of the three criminals is carried forward by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FIB), who demand a series of demonstrations. How far will these three criminals go to set themselves up for life?
5. Portal 2
This game rules. single player. Co-Operation Plot. Puzzles. I mean, hell, it’s a perfect game. Straight-forward, the Portal series sees players shoot down two portals to help them solve puzzles.
The way this mechanic is used and built through the game is seriously one of the best developed mechanics I’ve ever seen. And it only gets more wild and exciting (read: furious) in two-player co-op.
The Portal series could have made the list based only on the Portal mechanic, but instead, it gifted us with an exciting story, a deep cast of characters, and an unforgettable world. -CS
