When you want to play a big adventure at your own pace, you want one of the best open world games. Outside of the ultimate goal of defeating Calamity Ganon, players are free to explore this fallen kingdom in their spare time; The only waypoints on the map are those that the links themselves place.
Except for Elden Ring, Breath of the Wild offers a sense of adventure and discovery that is probably better than any other open-world game on the market. Even after spending hundreds of hours in Hyrule, one still had plenty to do.
3. Grand Theft Auto V
Grand Theft Auto V is one of the best games ever made. Duration. Rockstar went above and beyond when creating the magnificent state of San Andreas. The entire state feels lived-in, there is always something to do in every corner of the city, and the story is borderline absurd.
However, it all combines to make a game that you will find yourself coming back to over and over again. Rockstar decided to implement something different with this game. Instead of following the movements of one hero, you control three. The best part is that you can switch between all three whenever you want.
Each of the three protagonists is wonderfully pulled out, and the cast delivers on their lines in exquisite fashion. While we’re still waiting for any announcements for Grand Theft Auto VI, GTA V will keep you busy for a long, long time. 4. Far Cry 3
Far Cry 3 has drawn comparisons to The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim in its encouragement of exploration, hunting, and crafting, with the open world experience actually quite different between the two.
While Skyrim allows the player to take over the entire map at their own pace regardless of their participation in the main quest line, Far Cry 3 is designed for the player to balance their quest as they progress in the game.
However, you’ll get pockets of time to move around however you wish, and indulging in what Rook Island has to offer will help you immensely in your quests. Far Cry 3 is proof that first-person shooters can offer much more in the way of exploration and world-building beyond just shooting people in the corridors.
5. Subnautica
Another survival game enters the list, but this open world may be one of the most inviting — and unnecessary. When you crash land on an alien planet consisting almost entirely of water, you must do everything possible to escape, but even survive.
The depths of Subnautica continue to be terrifying, offering more and more twisted beasts, the deeper you dive.
Whether you’re exploring the story behind an ancient civilization or trying to carve your own little corner of the game’s vast ocean, Subnautica is a survival game that will leave you completely mesmerized. Its sequel (kind of) is also worth watching.
