Instead, it’s a clever time loop adventure, in which gathering information and gathering clues about your environment is as important as going toe-to-toe with powerful bosses.
What makes Deathloop work is its impeccable style. With 60s Cold War aesthetics, a fast-paced screenplay, and two hugely likable main characters, Deathloop will make you laugh as often as it makes you think. The game has the potential to be repetitive after a few runs, and it won’t be to everyone’s taste. But if you want a new gaming experience in a sea of similar ideas, Deathloop is a one-time loop you’ll want to get stuck in.
3. Astro’s Playroom
Diving into this little toy box of tech wizardry is a no-brainer, it installs on your PS5 for free. Don’t discount it just because it’s free, as well as being a great way to get to know DualSense’s new adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, it’s a fascinating game in its own right.
Pilot a glider, soar like a monkey, shoot ball guns into space, fight monsters and find collectibles, and enjoy some cheeky nods to PlayStation history along the way. Explore and you’ll find artifacts like UMD and original PlayStation, puzzle pieces, and collect coins to have fun with a Gachapon machine. It’s a great showcase for the machine’s new technical highlights, and gives you something to do while the next game on your playlist is downloaded.
4. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy
We didn’t think it was possible for Eidos Montreal to take over the infamous Marvel space pirates, but that’s exactly what it did with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. You play as Star-Lord, leading an early version of the Guardian, the crew just a few years into their lives together.
In this version, along with Groot, Rocket, Gamora, and Draxx, they have all survived a space war, almost all with backstories from history, coming up with their own tales of loss and grief. At its heart, this single-player adventure is about learning to work as a team in both exploration and combat, and realizing that friends can be just as good as family.
5. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
The historical assassination series is back with a bang, featuring the fur-lined boots of Viking clan leader Evor. Build a new settlement in old England, bring down kings to form alliances, and travel with your longship crew to plunder the towns and monasteries of Mercia. It will stand out as one of the great entries in the Assassin’s Creed series, thanks to the complex hero Eevor, brutal combat, and a wealth of customization options that cover everything from your fighting style to your face tattoo.
