The Lord of the Rings: Gollum video game review

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is an upcoming adventure set in Tolkien’s fantasy world. With players taking on the role of Gollum, we set out to get a different perspective on Middle-earth, and use the skills he has honed over 500 years. With the stealth approach, we would be able to sneak and climb through different locations.

So far, we know that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is set to take us to Mirkwood, Sirith Ungol and Barad-dur Tower, with characters like Gandalf and Elven King Thranduil appearing along the way. Gollum’s dual personality is also ready to come into play, with the option to give both sides when we make a decision.

It will be interesting to see how this shapes up, and with an official release date, we won’t have to wait much longer to find out. Below, we’ve gathered everything we know about The Lord of the Rings: Gollum so far, its official release date, platform, gameplay details, and more.

What is Lord of the Rings: Gollum?

Gollum, originally named Smeagol (or Trehald), was formerly a Stur, one of three early Hobbit-types. The name Gollum was derived from the sound of his thundering, suffocating cough.

With the effect of possessing the One Ring, his life went far beyond his nature. Smeagol was about 589 years old when he died, a remarkable age for a creature that was once a Hobbit, but was distorted and twisted in body and mind by the corruption of the Ring.

His main desire was to regain the ring that had enslaved him, and he pursued it for many years after Bilbo Baggins found it in Gollum’s cave within the Misty Mountains. Unsurprisingly, Gollum will play a key role in the final Quest of the Ring.

Lord of the Rings Gollum has PS5 enhancements

Speaking with OPM UK, Daedalic’s Jonas Husges confirmed that the game will take full advantage of the PS5’s SSD, commenting, “Restarting a segment after a miscalculation or a fatality with an orc guard” The encounter will be instant.

We want to encourage players to keep experimenting and the SSD removes a major hurdle.” As expected, Daedalic is also going to use the features of the DualSense controller, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, though didn’t go into any specifics on their functionality within the game.

In terms of locations, I’ve already mentioned a few: We’ll definitely be exploring Sirith Ungol and Mirkwood. The gods also omitted Barad-dur’s name during the presentation, which makes a lot of sense, given that Gollum is taken when he is captured by Sauron.

You can also visit the cave of Gollum, where there are many paintings on the rocks of the events of his life. If you choose to interact with them, both Gollum and Smeagol will be impressed by their ideas.

Publisher Nacon hosted a Nacon Connect (opens in new tab) presentation on July 7, giving us our first major gameplay reveal for Lord of the Rings: Gollum. It wasn’t particularly long, but you can watch it in full below:
