First-person shooter (FPS) games take a more direct approach to action by putting players in the shoes of the protagonist. The result is that they see the world through the character’s eyes and get a more in-depth experience during gameplay and story.
FPS games typically take the form of military shooters, although different variations on story and narrative are available. While some can be set in an open world, others offer replayable linear levels to progress. Despite the variation in presentation, the main gameplay of the FPS title remains the same.
1. Killzone: Shadow Fall
Believe it or not, but this is the only PS4 exclusive on this list. Sony has primarily focused on third-person open-world games of this generation, which is the only game in the genre that launched at the same time as the PlayStation 4.
Shadow Fall isn’t an extraordinary game, but it’s great fun for everyone. Treat it as a beautiful display of the PS4’s power and try to get around its jammed-in mechanics to match up with the console’s new features.
2. Star Wars Battlefront II
Divorce Battlefront II Take a second from its many, many controversies and you’ll find that, at its core, it’s much more than a capable and at times excellent shooter.
Controversial micro-transactions that could possibly have given an in-game advantage have now been removed, replaced by cosmetics. You have to wonder why they didn’t do it for starters.
As well as offering far more content than the multiplayer original reboot, Battlefront II comes with a single-player campaign that, while not surprising at all, tells an interesting enough story that it’s worth the low price of entry for the game. .
It certainly looks and feels part of a Star Wars game, but it’s best experienced with a few friends or you might find yourself wandering through other PS4 FPS games.
3. Deathloop
As an AAA game, Deathloop is quite astonishing, combining immersive sim and roguelite mechanics into one massive combat puzzle that slowly unravels over a playthrough.
You play as Colt, who wakes up on a beach with amnesia, before discovering that he is trapped on an island and trapped in a time loop due to something called the AEON program.
The premise is relatively simple, as you’re tasked with killing all the AEON leaders in one day, replaying them day after day to learn their locations and the best way to consistently eliminate them all.
For those who have played Dishonored, much of the gameplay feels similar, hopefully encouraging you to fully utilize your arsenal and go louder.
It’s a great example of innovating and trying new things in the AAA space, and although it doesn’t all go well, it still makes for an excellent FPS title.
4. Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
Of course, we had to include a game from this legendary series in our list of best FPS games and Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War Victory.
The game departs from the series’ usual linear approach, allowing you to choose which missions to take on and when, as well as how much time you want to spend discovering new information.
Plus, as you chase down Soviet nuclear spy Perseus. The campaign relies heavily on the backdrop of the 1980s and mixes fact and fiction.
Classic game mode, a new 40-player Fireteam mode. A new zombie story called Dark Aether and a great move by Activision. A new zombies plot called Dark Aether is available in multiplayer.
5. Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds
PUBG has arguably changed the industry overnight, sparking AAA’s fascination with the battle royale genre and inspiring many games to echo its formula. You know the deal.
One hundred players are left on an island all free – alone or with a team – and asked to scour for supplies and weapons to kill the other players.
Over time, everyone is forced into smaller areas and fights become more tense as you can only imagine where the other players are hiding.
It may have been bettered by newcomers to the genre, but PUBG has set the benchmark, and few games can replicate its casual moments of tension and chaos.
