the Best Survival Games Of All Time, ranked
A search of “survival games” on the Play Store used to bring up dozens of low-budget cookie-cutter zombie titles, but there are now plenty of fascinating games to explore.
From pixelated sandboxes to cell-shaded platformers, there is an extraordinary range of options. Even if you’re a casual gamer, there are games that reward careful thinking and strategy over fast-paced action.
The variety of survival games can mean it’s a challenge to find the best one for you, so we’ve sifted through the junk and brought you five of our favorites.
1. Rust
It’s safe to say that Facepunch’s survival sandbox game isn’t for everyone. It’s mythically challenging and hardcore in its nature, and the biggest question isn’t whether you’ll die, but whether it’s wolves, bears.
patrol helicopters or other players that will get you through first. Everyone walks around naked in a random male or female avatar, and you’re trapped in a desolate landscape where almost everything that moves makes you want to die.
Yet for some players, Rust’s brutal, unforgiving nature and fierce combat, or the bond between players, forms after they learn to trust each other. It’s always going to be divisive, but Rust keeps evolving in interesting ways.
2. Don’t Starve
With engaging artwork yet punishing gameplay, Don’t Starve is an addictive challenge and one of the best survival experiences out there (and in a rare turn of events, here’s to graduating from Early Access. One of the few games).
Crafting is complicated and satisfying as you try to survive the busy days and deadly nights. Fight (and eat) animals, practice both science and magic, and keep an eye on your mental health so you don’t go crazy. The standalone expansion Don’t Starve Together also lets you play with friends.
3. No Man’s Sky
When No Man’s Sky initially launched in 2016, developer Hello Games faced one of the harshest reactions any developer has seen. Fast forward nearly four years, however, and No Man’s Sky has been polished and expanded to offer one of the best open-world survival games out there for sci-fi fans.
Additionally, Hello Games continues to add additional content to the game, further improving the systems the team has established. Full multiplayer, massive galaxy, and fully procedurally generated universe are just a few of the many features fans of survival games want in No Man’s Sky.
4. Ark: Survival Evolved
The Ark: Survival Evolved is a first-person survival action-adventure game. You wake up in a mysterious and fantasy world populated by dinosaurs among other sticky creatures that you can fight or eventually tame.
Until then; Go collect some sticks, make a club, and find a place to start a fire. The second time you start the game, the fun is in every direction! Adventure is out there, and the sequel being announced recently has all the more reason to be back in the game now.
5. Terraria
This great 2D sidescrolling epic needs no introduction—it was this 2011 resourceful, dig-straight-down sim whose blippy soundtrack is still part of the meme discourse ten years later.
Featuring simple inventory mechanics, an intense base building system, vendors, an exciting arsenal of weapons, and hectic boss fights, Terraria is an absolute time sink. Plus, the vanilla game includes some quality-of-life additions that took Minecraft eight years to implement. We don’t need to say more, do we?
