As it came to an end, the Americans won nine medals on home turf on Sunday at the World Championships, which will go down as one of the most memorable days for red, white and blue in their long, successful history. According to the organisers, it was the best singles medal day for a country in the world.
Devon Allen’s false start kept America away from a possible sweep of the 110m hurdles final and what could have been the 10th medal of the day. He would now take his talents to the NFL, where he would attempt to make a roster for the Philadelphia Eagles. This was hardly the way he wanted to end up in the world.

Devon Allen experienced the devastation of a false start ahead of Sunday night’s 110m hurdles world championships, and now he has to shake it and put his head in a different place.
Allen is a week away from starting training camp with the Eagles, where he will try to build up the roster as a wide receiver. He said that after being disqualified to start the final 1000th part of the hurdles on Sunday night, he said that his focus will now be on football, but he has a lot more to do in track and field in the future.
Allen finished second in his semifinals behind only Olympic champion Hansley Parchment of Jamaica, who was forced to scrape from the final after suffering a hamstring injury minutes before the race.
The 13.09 matched Allen’s fastest time since his breakthrough of 12.84 in New York in June, the No. 3 time in world history and the No. 1 in the world this year. The third semi was assisted by a 2.5 meters per second tailwind, so points scored in that race are not considered for all-time listings. Any race aided by a tailwind of more than 2.0 meters per second is considered wind-aided.
Allen has now participated in four international championships without reaching the podium. He was 5th at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro at 13.31, 7th at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar, 13.70 and 4th at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo in 13.14.
Allen will report to Eagles training camp at the Novacare complex next week and begin his bid to make the team a wide receiver and returner. He last played football for Oregon in 2016.
