Niners QB Jimmy Garoppolo passes physical, won't be placed on PUP list
Lest there’s any doubt about who the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers is, coach Kyle Shanahan made it plainly clear on Tuesday: Trey Lance’s time has come and Jimmy Garoppolo’s still somewhere else. expected to land.
“We’ve gone to the tray,” Shanahan said. “It’s Trey’s team. It’s nothing against Jimmy. We made this decision a year ago and we’re going with that. We’re not going to mess with it anymore. Jimmy totally understands that.” It’s a business decision and that’s it. It’s not weird. Jimmy knows we’re going with Trey. Trey knows we’re going with Trey and our team does, and everyone’s going with those two guys. likes.”
Much of the discussion concerning the 49ers this off-season focused on Garoppolo and receiver Dibo Samuel, who requested a trade in April. Both players reported the start of training camp on Tuesday but appeared to be heading in opposite directions, with Garoppolo expected to leave and Samuel poised for a lucrative long-term contract.
While any off-season drama involving Garoppolo or Samuel hasn’t been fully settled yet, that time is coming soon.
Garoppolo sat down with Shanahan and general manager John Lynch on Tuesday morning as the three caught up and discussed what to expect next. Garoppolo is still recovering from surgery on his right shoulder in March, and although he has resumed throwing and has been cleared for practice, he will not participate in sessions when the Niners begin Wednesday morning.
49ers Have ‘Moved On’ to Trey Lance After Jimmy Garoppolo Meeting, per Report
According to a new report, following last week’s report that the 49ers had allowed Jimmy Garoppolo’s agents to seek a trade, the team has now “moved on” to Trey Lance as their franchise quarterback.
General Manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan met with Garoppolo on Tuesday morning, according to ESPN’s Adam Schaffter, with the takeaway that paths were about to part ways between San Francisco and the 30-year-old quarterback.
Despite not finding a business partner, Lynch was clear that the 49ers would not release Garoppolo. He is set to spend the 49ers $26.95 million in the 2022 cap space and if the team trades or releases him, it will save the team $25.55 million.
According to Albert Breuer of Sports Illustrated, the Browns are the only team to have a suitable cap space without moving things. Cleveland may desperately need a solid quarterback this season, depending on whether Deshan Watson is suspended for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, and how long that potential suspension lasts.
This eliminates Garoppolo’s $7.5 million injury guarantee, leaving no guaranteed money on his contract unless he is on the 49ers’ Week 1 roster. However this is not likely to happen.
The quarterback underwent shoulder surgery on March 8 and recently started throwing again. Most expect him to be traded before the start of the 2022 season.
“We don’t plan on having him practice with the team,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Tuesday.
The 49ers begin training camp this week, and the team has allowed Garoppolo and his agents to look for a trade. San Francisco had hoped to trade the veteran quarterback in March, but the surgery halted talks with the other teams. The 49ers are leading the quarterback with last year’s No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance.
The New England Patriots traded Garoppolo for the 49th in 2017. He has a 31–14 regular season record as the starting quarterback of San Francisco.
The 30-year-old Garoppolo completed 68.3 percent of his passes last season for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He has thrown 11,852 yards, 71 touchdowns and 38 interceptions in his eight NFL seasons.
