According to a new report, following last week’s report that the 49ers had allowed Jimmy Garoppolo’s agents to seek a trade, the team has now “moved on” to Trey Lance as their franchise quarterback.
General Manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan met with Garoppolo on Tuesday morning, according to ESPN’s Adam Schaffter, with the takeaway that paths were about to part ways between San Francisco and the 30-year-old quarterback.
Despite not finding a business partner, Lynch was clear that the 49ers would not release Garoppolo. He is set to spend the 49ers $26.95 million in the 2022 cap space and if the team trades or releases him, it will save the team $25.55 million.
According to Albert Breuer of Sports Illustrated, the Browns are the only team to have a suitable cap space without moving things. Cleveland may desperately need a solid quarterback this season, depending on whether Deshan Watson is suspended for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy, and how long that potential suspension lasts.
This eliminates Garoppolo’s $7.5 million injury guarantee, leaving no guaranteed money on his contract unless he is on the 49ers’ Week 1 roster. However this is not likely to happen.
The quarterback underwent shoulder surgery on March 8 and recently started throwing again. Most expect him to be traded before the start of the 2022 season.
