Top 5 Most Realistic War-Based Video Games of All Time

No matter where you look, war has found its way into almost every seam of pop culture. If Bruce Springsteen isn’t asking what’s generally good in the melodic genre, Ron Perlman is somewhat grumbling about its irreverent nature in Fallout 3. As the latter example attests, video games are no strangers to the theme of war, many of them using it as the basis for their entire existence.

However, the best combat games are those that contribute to or build upon ideas and themes that are weighty with clever judgment and creative chivalry. They remain with us for their unique perspectives on warfare, enriching our understanding of the phenomenon when many other titles glorify it above all without thinking. That’s not to say that some of the titles below sometimes don’t succumb to this temptation, but their potential for creative ambition is ultimately greater than the sum of their lesser missteps.

1. PANZER CORPS 2

Panzer Corps 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the classic war game Panzer Corps. After nine years of development, this new one burst through our defenses and overwhelmed us with over 1,000 types of units, 61 single-player scenarios, and a random map generator for both single and online play. If that’s not enough, there’s also 4K support for units, custom camouflage and insignia, and dozens of map skins for different locations, seasons, and seasons.

It’s already getting a healthy injection of DLC detail, covering each year of WW2 in fine detail and offering scenarios that aren’t always covered in other games set during this period. For details and an expert Panzer Corps 2 review, check out our sister site Wargamer.

2. Call Of Duty: World At War

Although its depictions of both Pacific and European theaters were stretched to the nth degree, 2008’s World of War remains one of Call of Duty’s most realistic scenes. From the beaches of Makin Atoll to the bombed-out streets of Berlin, World at War did a commendable job of portraying the tragedy and toll of war.

More recent interpretations of World War II are often inspired by larger-than-life characters and less-than-probable situations. This is true of World War I to an extent, but the game evokes the real feeling of being a small part in a seemingly vast global conflict.

3. WARNO

World War III never happened, but it certainly put people on edge during the Cold War. We’ve released a few games that show what World War III could look like, and Warno is another game that does just that. It’s an RTS title where we’re following a fight between NATO and the Warsaw Pact after a lot of escalating tensions. Players will take to battle hundreds of different historical units, be it tanks or helicopters.

When you’re not going through more competitive multiplayer matches, there are scripted scenarios to go with. Of course, with that said, this warno game is not fully available. Currently, you’ll find that Warno has an early access title via Steam. So as a result, you can expect more updates to the game as the developers continue to work on the project.

4. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

The video game Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus follows the events of Wolfenstein: The New Order which turns historical events. With the Nazi regime ruling the world, a military resistance looks to fight back within the US, serving as the country’s second American Revolution against the Nazi regime. However, we’d recommend playing the first installment, Wolfenstein: The New Order, to follow BJ Blazkowicz’s narrative journey as he battles against the Nazi regime if you haven’t done so yet.

Regardless, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is a great video game sequel that not only continues to capture the story of brutality with intense action and firefights. It’s also a single player focused video game adventure, so if you want cooperative or multiplayer other various multiplayer game modes you’ll have to look elsewhere.
